A personal wake-up call
“When you build AI systems, you understand their capabilities from the inside. You see what they can do today, and more importantly, you can project what they will do in two years, in five years. Most people experience AI as a consumer — a chatbot that answers questions, a tool that helps write emails. I experience AI as an engineer who understands the architecture, the training pipelines, and the exponential trajectory of improvement.”

The job that never comes back
Every previous technological revolution transformed jobs. The AI revolution closes them. When ATMs were introduced, banks opened more branches; teller employment increased for decades afterward. When manufacturing automated, new roles emerged in maintenance, process design, and quality control. The job evolved.
AI breaks this pattern. The replacement isn’t a tool the human worker now wields — it’s a substitute for the human worker. The position doesn’t transform. It closes permanently. AI systems don’t retire after 45 years. They don’t take parental leave. They scale infinitely at marginal cost. The slot ceases to exist.
If a job vacancy is filled by a 20-year-old, that job will open again in 45 years. If the same job is filled by an AI agent, that job will never open again. This is the most important insight in this book.

What you can do right now
The purpose of this book is not to create fear. It is to create preparation. Fear paralyzes. Preparation is what survives the moment. The actions that matter most are not heroic — they are habitual. Assess your job’s AI exposure this week. Start learning to work with AI tools this month. Build a financial buffer this quarter. Develop skills that compound regardless of how the technology curves.
The Solarians are not the people who avoided the wave. They are the people who turned to face it before it broke.
